A HISTORICAL NOTE:

THE SEEDS OF BET-NAHRAIN DEMOCRATIC PARTY WERE SOWED IN AUGUST 22, 1970 WHEN BET-NAHRAIN, AN ASSYRIAN NATIONAL MOVEMENT, CAME INTO BEING. THE FOUNDING TENETS OF BET-NAHRAIN WERE:

1. BET-NAHRAIN believes in safeguarding the principles of liberty, freedom, and justice for all peoples and nations, especially those of the Assyrian Nation.

2. BET-NAHRAIH believes in the preservation of the Assyrian identity, culture, history and language.

3. BET-NAHRAIN believes in promoting cooperation and unity among all segments of the Assyrian Nation. It opposes the artificial geographical and religious divisions created among our people.

4. BET-NAHRAIN believes in the human and national rights of all peoples, and it will cooperate and seek friendly  relationships with all nations, nationalities and world organizations which will respect our human and national rights.

5. BET-NAHRAIN believes in the peaceful means for attaining its national objectives in our ancestral homeland of Bet-Nahrain (Iraq).

6. BET-NAHRAIN will oppose and resist by all means any effort by any person, group or government aimed at
the eradication, liquidation or destruction of the Assyrian name and identity.

7. The national objective of BET-NAHRAIN is the establishment of 

"AN AUTONOMOUS STATE FOR ASSYRIANS IN BET-NAHRAIN (IRAQ)."

AFTE'R SIX YEARS OF SECRETIVE WORK, BET-NAHRAIN MOVEMENT WAS JOINED BY OTHER PATRIOTIC ELEMENTS TO DECLARE, ON NOVEMBER 1, 1976, "BET-NAHRAIN DEMOCRATIC PARTY", the Assyrian people's first political party.
